The front door of a home can be an attention-getting feature on the home’s exterior, beckoning potential buyers inside.
“Like a necktie, which is the focal point of an outfit, the front door is the focal point of the home,” says Debbie Zimmer, color expert at the Paint Quality Institute. “The color there sends a strong message.”
So what message could the color on the front door of your listings be conveying? Color psychologists suggest that the color of the front door can make a powerful statement about the home or the owner. Here’s what they say the different front door hues can mean, according to the Paint Quality Institute:
- Blue: Conveys a place of refuge or retreat
- Green: Projects health, tranquility, and harmony
- Black: Projects strength, power, and authority
- Red: Conveys passion, energy, and excitement
- Brown: Offers a natural look that can convey warmth, stability, and reliability

I thought brown meant that you have an HOA.
Pat – very funny comment. I think you may be correct in states like CA or AZ.
Very funny!
Great story! Years ago I had a client in Short Hills NJ with a classic colonial style home that was very plain, white with black shutters. I suggested to the owner painting the front door red. A bright, true red. She was uncertain and asked her painter, who completely agreed.
The home was so appealing and welcoming in person and in photos that it sold very, very quickly. People would call and inquire about the house with the red door!
That red door made the house stand out and become extra special to all who saw it.
Exteriors always make some impression on the buyer and doors are the part of it. While buying luxury homes Calgary or any other home at any other place makes the impression on the buyer with its exteriors and other enhancing facilities in the house.

I always thought that a red door meant your mortgage was paid off! – now you can guess what generation I’m from!
Regardless of whether a homeowner decides to spruce up the front door, she must remember that a message is being sent. Whether home buyers are looking for homes for sale in Livingston NJ, http://www.bevandbobsellhomes.com/community/area/Livingston/, or anywhere, they for forming an opinion of the home based on the entry area. If the door is old, with chipping paint, it can subliminally tell a home buyer this home is not being cared for as much as another, etc. I know northern New Jersey home buyers have set expectations based on the vibe they get when they get to the front door.
The front door should get a new coat of paint, and it should be reflective of a color within the home–it should tie it all together!
